Frequently Asked Questions

What are the causes of varicose veins?

The most common causes of varicose veins include a family history of varicose veins, obesity, aging, long periods of standing or pregnancy. With pregnancy, increased pressure within the abdominal area may increase susceptibility to varicose veins or aggravate existing varicose veins.

What are the Symptoms of varicose veins?

What is the diagnosis and treatment?

An ultrasound test is commonly used to determine if the blood in the leg veins is flowing properly through the legs. Treatment begins with conservative measures to include compression hose, leg elevation, exercise, and minimizing salt intake which may temporarily relieve the symptoms of varicose veins.

Is the laser procedure painful?

The procedure is virtually painless. When you are having your laser treatment, you may feel a sensation like a set of small pinpricks or rubber bands being snapped against the skin. We can decrease any discomfort you may feel by cooling the area under treatment.

What happens after I receive the laser procedure?

You can resume your normal activities right away. We just ask that you avoid strenuous exercise for about a week after the procedure.

Will there be any downtime after my treatment?

Most procedures performed at Chesapeake Vein Clinic are outpatient procedures. You can return to your normal activities the same day.

How will my skin appear after treatment?

Your skin may show bruising which may last for several days but will go away. It may take several weeks to notice the full effect that the laser treatment has had on your varicose veins.

Today, many vein problems can be easily treated without hospitalization or a long recovery time. The Chesapeake Vein Clinic can provide different forms of treatment including a virtually painless laser procedure to eliminate varicose veins.
